Description of the attraction
Kastoria is an ancient city in the northwestern part of Greece with its own history, traditions and rich cultural heritage. Among the most interesting sights is the Folklore or Ethnographic Museum of Kastoria.
The Folklore Museum of Kastoria was opened in 1972. The museum is located in one of the most beautiful and oldest buildings in the city near the shores of Lake Orestiada. The two-story mansion was built around the 16th and 17th centuries and has been so well preserved to this day that no restoration work was required to open a museum in it. The original decoration of the house has also been preserved in excellent condition.
Since the history of the city has been connected with furrier business for many centuries, the museum has a separate hall in the form of a workshop for sewing fur products. This exposition has a special place. Here are collected the most diverse tools that have ever been used to make fur products. Among the exhibits you can see the first special sewing machine for working with fur, which was brought from France in 1884. The house has a bedroom furnished with antique furniture, a nursery, a small and large living room, and a toilet. Various household utensils are also on display. There are three cellars on the ground floor of the building. In the wine cellar, you can still see a wine press, barrels for storing wine and special baskets for harvesting grapes. The second cellar was intended for storage of various preservation, and the third - for cereals, legumes and flour. Firewood and coal were also stored on the basement floor. In the courtyard there is a well, a boat hangar and a kitchen.
