Description of the attraction
The Ethnographic Museum is located on the territory of the estate of the Kogiomtsoglu brothers, major tobacco merchants. The traditional mansion was built between 1860 and 1866, and around the same period the amazing frescoes by artists from Xanthi and Bavaria were completed.
The twin symmetrical buildings and the surrounding area are combined to form a harmonious and magnificent ensemble. It is one of the most striking examples of the typical residential complexes that began to be built in the city of Xanthi during the last period of Ottoman rule, starting in 1830.
The exposition of the museum includes many collections of local costumes, a number of paintings; the halls house organ organs, gramophones, textiles and embroidery, household items, various decorations, agricultural implements, Thracian costumes and tobacco products. The museum contains the projects of the floor plans of the buildings of the complex, painted with wax on silk fabric. The original decorative ceilings are a special attraction of the museum.
