Description of the attraction
The fortress gate Hisar Kapia is one of the symbols of the city of Plovdiv. They are part of a unique architectural and historical ensemble built over a century ago.
The eastern gate of Philippopolis (the former name of Plovdiv) has existed since ancient times. But the cobblestone base dates from the Roman period (around the 2nd century). It was one of three, along with the southern and northern, now famous entrances to the ancient city, which was located in a place called "Tricholmia". During the Ottoman Empire, houses were built on partially preserved fortress walls. Some of these structures, erected on the stone city wall, can still be seen today.
The first gates at this place appeared in the 3rd century BC. After the invasion of the Goth tribe around the 2nd century, the walls were restored along with the equipped entrance. It is believed that on both sides of the gate there were barracks, which were part of the defensive complex. The open street leading to the exit was 13.2 meters long. There was a colonnade richly decorated with Corinthian-style elements. Sidewalks with a width of 2, 6 meters were located on both sides.
According to various historical sources, from the ancient gates to the present day, only the foundation has survived. The arch that can be seen in Plovdiv today was built between the 11th and 13th or 12th and 14th centuries. Nowadays, the Hisar Kapiya gate and everything that is located in the neighborhood - fortress walls, houses from the Middle Ages and a cobbled street - looks like you went many centuries ago, in the past.
