Description of the attraction

The Regional History Museum in the city of Ruse is one of the most important cultural institutions in Bulgaria. The museum operates not only in Ruse and the region, but also outside them - in Razgrad and Silistra.

The Historical Museum was opened in 1904 on January 1 by tsarist decree on the basis of a collection of archaeological and natural science exhibits that were collected and stored in the school for men. Prince Boris I. Gradually, the museum fund increased, in 1952 it was declared regional, and in 2000 - regional. Now the museum is located in the old building of the regional government, built at the end of the 19th century, on Alexander Battenberg Square. The museum contains over 130 thousand exhibits.

The museum has several branches (Historical City Museum, Museum of the Pantheon of Renaissance Heroes, Museum "City Life"), it also brings together open-air exhibitions: the regional historical museum of Ruse includes the medieval town of Cherven, the ruins of the ancient fortress Sexaginta Prista and the famous rocky Ivanovskie churches.

The museum has permanent exhibitions of a historical, ethnographic and archaeological nature. Visitors can appreciate the collections of mammoth and mastodon bones, household items of prehistoric people; prehistoric sculpture and pottery; medieval frescoes, as well as the Borovsky ancient Thracian treasure, dating back to the 4th century BC. (ritual wine service made of silver with gilding). Here are the finds from the archaeological excavations of the castles of Sexaginta Prista, Yatrus and Cherven; ritual and household artifacts; ethnographic collections of clothes and dishes of the townspeople of the late 19th - early 20th centuries; personal belongings of representatives of the revolutionary liberation movement; numismatic collection and much more. Museum materials clearly demonstrate the history of the region from prehistoric times to modern times.

The museum often hosts scientific meetings, conferences, seminars and schools, presentations of new discoveries and archaeological finds, as well as theatrical performances.
