Description of the attraction
One of the most famous houses in Ulm - Kornhaus - was built in 1954. The architect of the project was Kaspar Schmid; the house was conceived as a three-storey building with high vaults. It is interesting that earlier there was a grain warehouse at the same place, but it was completely burnt out in one of the fires. The decision to build a new house with the same purpose was motivated by the functional need to store grain for the needs of the city's residents and for sale.
The style in which the architect completed the project itself, and then the builders put it into practice - the Renaissance. Even today, when the building is completely redone inside and is a completely modern center for exhibitions, conferences and concerts, it feels a subtle romantic touch of the distant 16th century.
Initially, the building was built according to all the rules of granaries: a kind of barn made of logs, plastered on top. Interesting log gables gave it a sophisticated style and attracted attention to the structure. The portals on the south and north sides have been specially conceived in different forms, this is one of the distinguishing features of the architectural style. Thus, the southern portal was a vivid example of late Gothic, complemented by some details characteristic of the Renaissance.
Unfortunately, in the days of the Ulm raid in 1944, the Kornhaus was practically destroyed. After the end of World War II, it was restored using preserved drawings and old photographs, but this only affected the external decoration. The decision to make modern premises inside this house turned out to be correct: today this building enjoys fame in the business and commercial circles of the city.
