Description of the attraction

Another famous place in Cyprus - the small fishing village of Liopetri - is located near the city of Protaras, in the Famagusta district. Liopetri was once famous for its churches, of which at the beginning of the last century there were seven in the entire small village, in which at that time less than 4,000 people lived. Now the number of temples has decreased significantly, but there is still something to see there. For example, one of the oldest churches in Liopetri, which has survived to this day, is the church of Agios Andronikos, which was built in the 15th century. This building became famous for the beautiful paintings that can still be seen on its walls. It is also worth visiting the Church of the Virgin Mary, built in the 16th century.

In addition, during the struggle of the inhabitants of the island for their independence, the village became one of the places where hostilities were carried out. So, in 1958, four young Cypriots - Fotis Pittas, Andreas Karios, Elias Papakiriaku and Christos Samaras - entered into an unequal battle with British troops, hiding in one of the residential buildings of Liopetri. The British pelted the building with grenades and bombs. Now these dead soldiers are considered national heroes, and a monument was erected at the place of their death.

In general, Liopetri is a quiet and peaceful place, perfect for families. The villagers are mainly engaged in fishing and basket weaving, which are famous throughout the island and can be a good souvenir of a trip to Cyprus. And in small restaurants on the shore you can taste traditional local dishes made from freshly caught fish.
