Description of the attraction

The main Orthodox shrine of the city of Zaporozhye is the Intercession Cathedral, which is located on Gorky Street.

The first wooden old Church of the Intercession in the city was erected on the site of the modern main cathedral in 1778. In May 1886, on the site of the dismantled building, a new stone Cathedral of the Intercession of the Intercession was laid, the fate of which was not very merciful, since in the 30s of the twentieth century it was completely destroyed by the Bolsheviks.

The construction of an almost exact copy of the destroyed temple began in 1993 and lasted for 14 years. The location and appearance of the Holy Protection Cathedral completely coincide with the former Alexander Cathedral (previously the city of Zaporozhye was named "Alexandrovsk"). In order to recreate the church in its original form, the main designers and architects of the cathedral from the Zaporozhgrazhdanproekt Institute had to study the historical archives of St. Petersburg and Moscow. Architect D. Romanov found photographs of the cathedral, which operated on the same site before the 1917 revolution. The centuries-old experience of church design was also studied.

The consecration of the restored church coincided with the Day of the Zaporozhye Cossacks and the anniversary of the liberation of the city from the Nazi invaders - October 17, 2007.

The Intercession Cathedral is perhaps the most elegant of all the churches in Zaporozhye. Its building combines massive portals, five not very large domes, a huge number of semicircular windows, and intricate carved decorations on the facades. Inside the temple, there are thirteen icons painted by a local artist.

Today the 53-meter-high Holy Protection Cathedral is a real gem of the city of Zaporozhye and one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Ukraine.
