The V. Magar Music and Drama Theater is an academic regional Ukrainian music and drama theater, which is located in the city of Zaporozhye on Lenin Avenue, 41.
The building of the V. Magar Zaporozhye Music and Drama Theater is a work of architecture of the era of monumental Soviet classicism. It was built in 1953 in the style of the "Stalinist Empire" and is decorated with pilasters and bas-reliefs, stucco and beautifully painted, sparkling crystal chandeliers, as well as exclusive mosaics. The pediment of the theater building is decorated with a plaster sculpture of a girl with a lyre, at whose feet there are two Komsomol members with a bandura.
The Music and Drama Theater has existed since 1929, and for quite a long time it was named after N. Shchors. But in 2003 the theater was named after V. Magara. V. G. Magar, in contrast to the famous hero of the civil war N. Shchors, was directly related to the theater. He was the People's Artist of the USSR and, in addition, from 1936 to 1965 was the chief director of the theater. In 2004 the theater named after V. Magar was given the status of "academic".
The repertoire of the music and drama theater includes Ukrainian classical, modern and world drama, musicals and operettas, comedies, musical and plastic performances and performances of a heroic and romantic orientation. In the theater named after V. Magar, a small stage and a theater-salon have been opened. Also, an open-air theater was created under him, its performances are held in the historical and cultural complex "Zaporizhzhya Sich" and the International Center of the Danapris Theater.
Today, the Regional Music and Drama Theater named after V. Magar is one of the best theater groups in the city, based on its aesthetic guidelines, architectural solutions and technical equipment used.
