Description of the attraction
Zanzibar is a "reserve island". The old stone city of Zanzibar is one of the most impressive places on the coast. It is a chaotic cluster of winding labyrinthine streets, with wonderful carved, but, unfortunately, quickly deteriorating, brass-studded doors. Endless little shops, bazaars, mosques, courtyards, fortresses, two former palaces of the sultans, two huge cathedrals, faded colonial mansions, abandoned Persian-style baths and a whole collection of quaint foreign consulates. Various historical sites are scattered around the city, such as the destroyed palace of Marukhubi, built in 1882 by Sultan Bargash to contain his harem, the ruins of several palaces and the cave of Mangapwani slaves, the unique Khosani forest and much more.
