Description of the attraction

If you go down the stairs from Opatička Street to Tkalčićeva Street, then after a few tens of meters you can see the Zagreb Glyptotek. The basis of her collection is made up of replicas of famous Croatian statues made of plaster. It sounds boring, but it is worth visiting the Glyptotek, if only to immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of this place. After all, the museum occupies a building of a former factory, built of red brick. Glyptotek was founded in 1937 by Dr. Anton Bayer. His goal was to create plaster casts of antique statues located in Croatia and neighboring countries, and sculptures created much later (in the 9th-15th centuries) by Croatian craftsmen. These replicas of medieval monuments, according to the founder of the Glyptotek, should be publicly available.

Among the treasures of the museum, it is worth noting a rich collection of copies of tombstones installed in cemeteries in Bosnia and Herzegovina. These ancient stones, carved with floral ornaments, genre scenes or images of the sun, were created by unknown folk masters.

In several halls of the museum you can find a good selection of works by Croatian sculptors. There are both copies of works and originals of the famous carvers Antun Augustincic, Ivan Meštrovic and many others.

In addition to the main exhibition, there are often temporary exhibitions devoted to photography, design, and art. Not only visiting connoisseurs of beauty tend to visit them, but also local residents. Each such exhibition, which is being prepared for a long time and carefully, is a real event in the cultural life of the city!
