Description of the attraction

The picturesque island of Skiathos, which lies in the Aegean Sea, is famous not only for its magnificent beaches, but also for the abundance of ancient monasteries. One of the most famous holy abodes of the island is the Panagia Kunistra (Virgin Kunistra) monastery. It is located in the middle of a pine forest on the southwestern side of the island, about 13 km from the town of Skiathos.

The foundation of the monastery is associated with the appearance in these places of the icon of the Virgin Mary. She was found tied with a rope to a pine branch. The icon fluttered in the wind and radiated divine light. This is probably why it got the name "Kounistra" (translated from Greek "Kouno" means "thrill, movement"). However, there are other versions as well. Subsequently, this was the name of the monastery, built here in the 1650s.

The icon of the Virgin Mary is considered the patroness of Skiathos and today is kept in the Cathedral of the capital. Every year, on November 21, Christians celebrate the Entry into the Temple of the Most Holy Theotokos. This day is one of the most important religious festivals for the islanders. On the eve, a solemn procession with the icon of the Virgin Mary moves on foot from the city of Skiathos through the mountains to the monastery of Panagia Kunistra. An all-night festive service is held there, and in the morning the icon returns to the city in the same way.

The cathedral of the temple is a one-nave basilica with a dome. The interior decoration of the church building impresses with an abundance of beautiful frescoes. Also, the magnificent wooden iconostasis with gilding deserves special attention.

Not so long ago, a large-scale restoration was carried out in the monastery. The Monastery of Panagia Kunistra is much smaller than the Monastery of Panagia Evangelista and has a more modest history. Nevertheless, the unique atmosphere of tranquility and comfort prevailing in the monastery, and the special charm of the picturesque surroundings, attracts a huge number of visitors.
