Description of the attraction
The Museum "Saved Artistic Values" is a branch of the Brest Regional Museum of Local Lore. Opened on February 4, 1989 in a mansion that, ironically, is itself a saved artistic treasure. This architectural monument was built in 1925-27 according to the project of the architect Y. Lisetskiy and miraculously survived among the modern urban development.
The museum contains art treasures confiscated at the border by Brest customs officers. Alas, the collection of the museum is the richest, and it is regularly replenished with new confiscated items. The unusual theme of the collection and its diversity every day attracts many residents of Brest and tourists, who with great interest inspect both the values themselves and the ways in which they tried to smuggle them through customs.
It is striking that cynical barbarism with which the cultural heritage of the nation is attempted to be exported abroad at any cost. Thus, the museum presents the priceless ancient icon “St. Vasily Sevastiysky with his life , sawn into 6 parts.
The exposition of the museum is presented in 10 halls. In the first room you can see unique materials about the activities of the Brest customs to prevent the export of cultural and artistic values abroad. Three halls are occupied by confiscated icons, of which the third is occupied by icons in silver frames. The oldest icons in the museum date back to the 16th century. Among them are "Savior in Strength", "Our Lady of Vladimir", "Annunciation".
The rest of the rooms contain antique furniture, jewelry, arts and crafts from all over the world. There are famous Faberge jewelry, Buddha figurines, and masterpieces of world painting.
During the existence of the museum, it has become a fashionable cultural center of the city. Literary evenings, concerts, interesting exhibitions and other events are held here.
