Description of the attraction

Afajato is the highest point in Ghana, at 885 meters. The mountain is located in the Agumatsa ridge system near the villages of Liati Vote and Gblidi, in the Volta region on the border with Togo. The word afaja means a thorny poisonous bush that grows on the slopes, and the ending “to” in the Ewe dialect means “mountain”.

From the summit, visitors can enjoy fantastic panoramic views of the surrounding communities, forests, mountains, valleys and Lake Volta.

Afajato is covered with rainforest, which is home to a variety of animals and plants. During the ascent, travelers have the opportunity to admire more than three hundred species of butterflies; 33 species of mammals have been recorded in the thickets, among which primates stand out. Monkeys are curious and friendly, often approaching visitors and asking for food. In addition to the summit itself, on the side of the Gblidi-Chebi in the ridge there is a chalk cave in which the gblidi people lived.

Usually, a guided tour includes visits to nearby villages, acquaintance with customs, farming and agriculture, tasting local cuisine. For a fee, tourists are given the opportunity to organize an overnight stay in the clay house of the village with participation in a traditional celebration and dancing. You can also climb to the top on your own, taking with you a sufficient amount of water and food.

You can get to the foot of the mountain from the bus station in Accra to Hohoi, and then by minibus to the village of Gblidi.
