Description of the attraction
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Carlton Gardens is located at the northeastern tip of Melbourne's downtown area. Its 26-hectare territory houses the Royal Exhibition Center, the Melbourne Museum, the Imax cinema, tennis courts and many playgrounds for children. The Royal Exhibition Center and Carlton Gardens are listed by UNESCO as “Places of Historical, Architectural, Aesthetic, Social and Scientific Significance to the State of Victoria”.
Carlton Gardens is an outstanding example of Victorian landscape design with wide lawns and a variety of plants representing European and Australian flora. Among the trees that can be seen in the park are English and Austrian oaks, poplars, plane trees, elms, spruces, cedars, araucaria and evergreens such as large-leaved ficuses combined with annual flowers and shrubs.
In Carlton Gardens you can also find animals - possums, ducks, giant white-legged, kookaburras and many city birds.
Wandering through the alleys of the park, you can admire the numerous fountains and architecture of the Royal Exhibition Center, here and there peeping out from behind the crowns of trees. Two small lakes adorn the southern part of the park. In the northern part there is a Museum, tennis courts, a curator's house and playgrounds for children, designed in the form of a labyrinth.
The three main fountains of the park are the Exhibition Fountain, erected in 1880, the French Fountain and the Westgart Drinkin Fountain.
