Description of the attraction

The Gosauseen lakes consist of three small lakes at once, located in a picturesque valley on the very border of Upper Austria with Styria. The lakes themselves lie in a crevice and are surrounded by powerful rocks that are part of the mighty Dachstein mountain range, the maximum height of which exceeds 2500 meters. The popular Austrian resort of Hallstatt is located about 10 kilometers from the lakes.

The total length of the entire group of lakes is more than 5 kilometers in length. They are connected to each other only by long channels formed during the melting of glaciers. It is believed that it is the glaciers and glaciers of this mountain range that continue to feed the Gosauseen lakes. The estimated date of the formation of these lakes is considered to be the last ice age. All three lakes are under state protection.

The largest is Lake Forderer Gosau, its length is almost two kilometers. It is it that is located closest to the Dachstein mountains. The view of this lake and the cliffs towering above it is considered one of the most popular in all of Austria. Also in this lake there are very clean waters, which serve as a habitat for many species of fish - pike, perch, trout and salmon.

But located exactly in the center of this system, Lake Gozaulake is the smallest - it is 350 meters long and does not exceed 200 meters in width. It is curious that it is filled with water only in spring, during the melting of snow and floods. But on the shores of this lake there are two tiny hunting huts and a peasant house, considered a masterpiece of wooden architecture.

As for the last lake of this trio - Khinter Gosau, it is quite large in size - 800 meters long and 600 meters wide, and also the highest located - at an altitude of 1.2 kilometers above sea level, while two the previous lakes have not yet reached the kilometer mark. Hinter Gosau is also filled with water mainly only in spring. By the way, on the shores of this lake there is also a tiny wooden farm with a hunting lodge.

A cable car begins near the Forderer Gosau lake, leading to various high-mountain resorts. There are also many hiking trails and small ascents that offer wonderful views of the Gosauseen chain of lakes and the Dachstein mountains.
