Description of the attraction

The Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit is one of the iconic sights of the city of Magadan. The Magadan Orthodox community was registered in 1989, initially all services were held in a house specially adapted for this (now - the territory of the Intercession Monastery, in the village of Solnechny).

The main initiator of the construction of the temple was the first bishop of Magadan (and temporarily Kamchatka and Sakhalin) Arkady. The solemn consecration of the temple in honor of the Descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles took place in February 1992. The last buildings were built in 1990-1992. The one-domed temple is a rectangular quadrangle with a tiered bell tower located under a small tent. The church has a small chapel and a bookshop.

Soon the church was decorated with icons donated by His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II. In September 1993, the patriarch personally visited the temple. Under Bishop Rostislav, the Holy Spiritual Church was decorated with a beautiful iconostasis, as well as a number of lists of ancient icons by famous masters - the Monk Daniel the Black and Andrei Rublev from the Trinity Cathedral of the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra. In November 1997, the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God was brought to the church, in front of the miraculous image of which every Sunday the townspeople gather for an akathist.

In the church there is an ark with the relics of great saints, as well as icons with particles of the relics of St. Innocent of Moscow, St. Seraphim of Sarov, Hieromartyr Kharalampius, Enlightener of Alaska, Blessed Matrona of Moscow, the supreme apostles Peter and Paul.

In 1996, the Baptismal Church of St. John was built near the church. Until 2011, the Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit had the status of a cathedral. In September 2011, during the consecration of the new Trinity Cathedral in Magadan, the Dukhoshoeshestsky church lost its status as a cathedral.
