Description of the attraction
Among the most interesting places on the Greek island of Tilos, which are definitely worth a visit, the abandoned town of Mikro Chorye undoubtedly deserves special attention, nestled on the slopes of a picturesque hill just a few kilometers from the port of the island of Livadia.
The history of this city began in the Middle Ages, when people, fearing pirate raids, preferred to settle farther from the coast and mainly on a hill, which certainly gave a certain advantage and practically excluded a surprise attack.
The settlement of Mikro Chorye was formed around a small fortress of Misaria, built on the top of a hill in the second half of the 14th century by the knights of the Order of St. John, who, having settled on the island, tried to strengthen the old Byzantine fortifications as much as possible and built new ones.
For centuries, the town lived its own measured life, but at the beginning of the 20th century its inhabitants began to gradually leave Mikro Chorye - someone moved to the coastal Livadia, and someone left the island altogether. By 1960, Micro Chorje was finally abandoned and turned into a "ghost town".
And although to this day only gray ruins have remained from the once flourishing city and the only bright spot that definitely adds color to it is the snow-white church of Agia Zoni, built in 1861, covered with red tiles with an impressive bell tower, this place has its own special charm, which and attracts the guests of Tilos here.
And in the summer, in the late afternoon, the abandoned city comes to life - in the restored building, from the terrace of which you can enjoy excellent panoramic views, there is a “Music bar”, where the fun often does not subside until the morning.
