Four years of continuous stay does not mean that you cannot travel outside Finland. You just need four years of net time spent in the country to obtain permanent resident status.

The ways of obtaining a residence permit in Finland differ little from those followed by immigrants all over the world:
- Family reunification and marriage with a citizen of the country.
- Repatriation or confirmation of Finnish roots.
