Quiet and cozy Croatia attracts tourists with its beauty, clean sea, bordered by pine groves, and low prices. The private sector is very developed here, so you can easily drive along the coast or inland, staying overnight in small hotels or private houses rented by their owners. Roads in Croatia are constantly improving, freeing themselves from the consequences of the war in Yugoslavia.

Major tracks and minor

In recent years, major highways have been built or refurbished that cross the country in several directions. The most popular among tourists are the trail running parallel to the coast from Rijeka to Dubrovnik, as well as the road leading to the Plitvice Lakes Nature Reserve.

Most highways are distinguished by excellent road quality and bright markings, they are separated by a fence in the middle. Travel through them is paid. If you need to get somewhere as quickly as possible, then these highways are the best way. They pass through many-meter tunnels, punched in the mountains, they are allowed the highest possible speed in the country. As a result, it will be possible to get to the desired settlement quickly and comfortably.

In principle, all roads along the coastline, the focus of the tourism industry, are of good quality. But a trip inland, to less popular regions, can leave an unpleasant aftertaste. Although not completely broken, local roads are not as convenient and often have potholes.

Especially beautiful views will be available to those tourists who dare to ride along the serpentines along the coast. Sometimes the views are breathtaking. But it is not worth driving along such winding routes with sharp ups and downs. Such a road can only be mastered by an experienced driver. But the reward will be the opportunity to see the incredible beauty of the seascapes. In addition, a car ride along the coast will allow you to stop anywhere and swim on the wild beaches.

Features of roads in Croatia

A tourist should know some of the nuances of traveling by car in Croatia:

  • Violation of the rules is punished here very strictly and inevitably. Speeding is especially strict. This is understandable - in the conditions of narrow mountain roads, any violation can end in tragedy.
  • Among the mandatory requirements here is the mandatory wearing of seat belts for all passengers, as well as the included dipped beam in winter.
  • You can rent a car here not only in large or small firms, but also from individuals who rent not only housing, but also transport.
  • The local driving culture is calm and courteous. The rules are rarely violated here, and therefore the movement is very safe, at least on the roads passing through the plains.

Holidays in Croatia in your car (or rented) will give you freedom of movement, and also, in the case of a large family, will save money, because public transport is not cheap here. But you should avoid narrow mountain roads if you feel insecure while driving, because local serpentines, both along the coast and in the north, can be pretty nerve-racking.
