The ancient capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania still attracts thousands of guests. Walking in the Old Town of Vilnius
Real tourists make thousands of routes every day through the old part of Vilnius. Soviet buildings are unattractive, they made the city gray and inexpressive, huge shopping and entertainment centers are interesting only for shoppers.
Among the historical monuments and sights of the Lithuanian capital, the following objects stand out:
- the castle of Gediminas, located on a high hill;
- Cathedral Square with a monument to the founder of the city;
- the pompous building of Vilnius University, which is considered the oldest in Europe.
The main architectural highlight of Vilnius is undoubtedly the Gediminas Castle. The legend has survived that the wolf on the hill who dreamed of the king suggested the place of the fortress construction. Unfortunately, the complex has not been completely preserved, you can see the fortifications, part of the fortress wall and the Gediminas' tower.
The tower houses a museum that tells about this complex; you need to climb through very narrow passages, along high steps. Through the loopholes, the most beautiful views of Vilnius and its surroundings open up.
Vilnius - the city of temples
The places of worship preserved in Vilnius deserve special attention. Firstly, they belong to various confessions, the largest part are Catholic churches, then Orthodox churches, there are also preserved synagogues. Secondly, temples and monastic complexes were created throughout the long history of Vilnius, therefore they are interesting as architectural objects built in one style or another. Third, they are associated with prominent Lithuanian and foreign politicians and cultural figures.
