Mountainous Austria has a long tradition of brewing. There are about 360 types of beer in the country - in Austria it can be safely called a national treasure. This concept is confirmed by both the very high number of breweries per capita and the annual consumption of beer per person. There is one production in the country for every 55 thousand inhabitants, while the average Austrian drinks at least 120 liters a year.
Born in alpine meadows
Austrian brewers use applied technology with a great deal of personality. We can say that beer in Austria is brewed in a different way by everyone, and pub visitors are often offered very extravagant varieties such as beer absinthe or highly carbonated drinks in bottles similar to champagne containers. In addition, the Austrian frothy drink is usually stronger than in neighboring Germany or the Czech Republic.
The most common beers in Austria are:
- Light Lagerbier has a soft malt balance and hop bitterness.
- Bottom-fermented Pilsbier beer undergoes additional hopping during the production process.
- Spezialbier has a minimum initial wort extract of 12.5%.
- Weizenbier must have at least half the wheat malt content.
- Kellerbier is an Austrian unfiltered beer with yeast and some insoluble protein.
- Bockbier is usually brewed at Christmas.
All breweries in Austria are the pride of their owners. In the establishments at the breweries, you can taste drinks and buy your favorite.
Cognitive geography
By the names of the cities where famous Austrian breweries are located, you can study the geography of the country. So in the city of Leoben, monks brewed beer in the 11th century. The area of the city was called Gösser and it was in local industries that pasteurization was first applied. As the official symbol of the country, Gösser beer was the main drink of the banquet held in 1955 in honor of the signing of the Austrian State Treaty.
The Zipfer, whose secret recipe is to use the finest female hop buds, is made in the brewery in Zipf, Upper Austria. The production specializes in premium drinks.
The Stria region is represented on the world market by the products of the Graz breweries. Among the ten local varieties are Urbock with a strength of 9, 6% and the delicious non-alcoholic Libero.
