Belarus is a state in the east of Europe, here they are attentive to the monuments of history and carefully preserve the sights, walks in Grodno, Minsk or Vitebsk are the main proof of this.
From a tourist point of view, Grodno is considered one of the most attractive Belarusian cities. Many buildings in the center of this settlement have managed to preserve their historical appearance and survive during local and world military conflicts. In addition, it has an advantageous location - on the border of Belarus, Poland and Lithuania. Therefore, a trip to Grodno can smoothly flow into an acquaintance with the life of neighboring countries.
Walking along Grodno Castle
Oddly enough, several castles have survived in Belarus, two of them are located in the regional center on the banks of the Neman. Grodno castles are named - Old and New, explaining the sequence in which the buildings were erected.
The first castle complex is located on the high bank of the Nemunas, it has an impressive view. All city excursions begin with an inspection of this historical monument. You can watch the architectural masterpieces of Belarusian and foreign architects on your own, but many pages of history will remain, as they say, “behind the scenes”.
Grodno's second castle, New, was built later than its "colleague", but it looks more elegant. There are also many attractions here that are worthy of tourist admiration.
Grodno - the city of churches
Another tourist route along the streets of Grodno can be associated with visiting religious buildings, which are also well preserved. The proximity to the Polish border explains the large number of churches, moreover, belonging to different denominations. In the list of attractions:
- a church consecrated in honor of St. Francis Xavier, aka Farny, that is, the main church of the city;
- no less beautiful Church of the Annunciation, located in the monastery of the Brigits;
- a church consecrated in honor of the Virgin Mary (in the Franciscan monastery).
There are also Orthodox shrines in the city, one of them is the Kolozha Church, the building dates back to the 12th century, and is on the list of the oldest religious buildings in the country. It stands on the high bank of the Nemunas, the course of which is changing, so there is a risk of losing this shrine. The city authorities are constantly taking steps to strengthen the coast and preserve the architectural gem for future generations.
