The capital of Belarus is the largest city, but in terms of the number of preserved monuments it is inferior to other settlements of the country. Meanwhile, walks around Minsk remain in the memory of tourists, who note the amazing well-groomed city, the respect for the preserved architectural masterpieces, the desire to demonstrate the best cultural and historical monuments.

Walks in ancient Minsk

Unfortunately, nothing remained of the ancient Zamchishche, only a symbolic stone, which is located on the spot where the first temple of Minsk stood. And the famous river Nemiga, which is mentioned in the "Tale of Bygone Years …" itself, is hidden in a concrete ring and flows deep underground. At present, only the place where it flows into the Svisloch can be seen.

Most excursions start from the Zamchische, one of them leads to the so-called Upper Town. This part of Minsk is located on a hill, at one time, it was she who began to play the main role in the city, and today it bears the mission of the historical center of the Belarusian capital. Among the most important sights of the Upper Town:

  • the architectural ensemble, which is located on Freedom Square (the first name is Cathedral Square);
  • Town Hall, a symbol of independence (the building has been restored);
  • Catholic Church, Cathedral of the Virgin Mary, which survived the Soviet era as the House of the Athlete;
  • Holy Spirit Cathedral (cathedral), a former church of the Bernardines.

Travel to the past

Another opportunity to see old Minsk is to go down from the Upper Town to the Svisloch. Here is the Trinity Suburb - two- and three-story houses. Unfortunately, this place has undergone reconstruction, significantly different from what was here in the 19th century.

But in Troitskoye there are now many restaurants and cafes, museums, including the museum of Maksim Bogdanovich, the youngest genius of Belarusian literature of the early twentieth century. The poet was born in Minsk, he spent most of his short life outside Belarus, but became a Belarusian poet.

As a token of gratitude, streets in many cities of Belarus are named after him, and in Minsk M. Bogdanovich Street is considered the longest. There are two museums in the city dedicated to the poet, in Trinity Suburb, and the memorial museum "Belarusian Hut", not far from the station, as well as a monument to the poet, erected not far from the place where the future genius of Belarusian literature was born.
