In the state of Hesse, this settlement occupies an important position, it is both the main city of the metropolitan region and the center of the economic, scientific, cultural, and tourist life of Germany. Since it is located on the territory of Franconia, originally inhabited by the Franks, it got its name from them. In fact, the history of Frankfurt am Main begins with the era of the famous Roman Empire.
From antiquity to the end of the Middle Ages
Archaeologists today find objects in the vicinity of the city that are related to the Roman period of government. Many of the artifacts date back to the 1st century AD, so in a certain sense we can say that the history of Frankfurt am Main began to be written in Rome.
Later, it was in this ancient city that representatives of the highest power of the empire were elected. The first event of this level happened in 885. Over the centuries, German emperors and kings were chosen and crowned in neighboring Aachen. The first representative of the legal authority, who was crowned in Frankfurt am Main, was Maximilian II (1562), and the following emperors followed his example. The last coronation took place in 1792, Franz II became emperor, he completed the era of the Roman Empire in these territories.
The life of a medieval city was no different from its neighbors - the same problems caused by internecine wars, land claims of neighbors, epidemics. The city was helped to survive by the Frankfurt Fair, which was first held in 1150, the book fair has been held since 1478, and continues to operate today.
Frankfurt am Main in the XIX – XX centuries
At the beginning of the 19th century, Napoleonic troops left their traces in the history of Frankfurt am Main, as the city's territory was repeatedly subjected to French occupation. The defeat of Napoleon, his abdication from the throne led to serious political changes in Europe.
The Grand Duchy of Frankfurt disappeared from the map of Europe, the city territories were annexed to the German Federation. Frankfurt, given its special position, became free and had a representative in the Bundestag. After 1866, the city came under the jurisdiction of Prussia. Geographically it belongs to the province of Hesse-Nassau.
In 1920, Frankfurt am Main again experienced a period of French occupation and liberation, then the Nazis came to power. Towards the end of World War II, the city's quarters are undergoing multiple bombings, the historical buildings of the city have ceased to exist, only individual buildings have survived.
