The main heraldic symbol of the capital of Chuvashia looks rather optimistic and joyful. This perception is facilitated by the elements located on the shield of the traditional French form and present in the frame. In addition, the coat of arms of Cheboksary is colorful (as can be seen in any color photo), for the background of the shield and elements, colors are chosen that are quite actively used in European heraldry.
Description of the heraldic symbol
The main official symbol of Cheboksary is not so many years old. The emblem of the Chuvash capital, approved in June 1969, served as a prototype for it. Despite the fact that the city's emblem was approved during the Soviet era, it lacks elements that could be associated with the power of the Soviets.
The modern symbol of Cheboksary, approved in August 1998, has a number of differences compared to the 1969 model. The changes also affected the color palette of a number of elements, and the introduction of new symbols of particular importance. Another new complex appeared in the frame of a shield; the author of the sketch was Elli Yuriev, a famous Chuvash artist.
The modern heraldic symbol of the capital of Chuvashia contains the following complexes and elements:
- a silver shield with a head and a base;
- three golden stars crowning the composition;
- a stylized floral ornamental motif in a frame;
- motto cartouche with an inscription - the name of the city in two languages.
Meaning of symbols
Each of the elements has a complex structure and differs in color. For example, a shield is divided into two unequal fields by a zigzag line. This line symbolizes a stream of water, in this case, the great Volga, on the banks of which Cheboksary is located.
In the lower azure field there are flying ducks painted in silver, in the upper scarlet field there is a traditional Chuvash ornament - "oaks". In the central figure of the ornament, you can see the number "1469", which indicates the date of the first mention of this settlement.
Ducks migrated to the modern coat of arms from the emblem given to the city by the highest decree in 1783. This symbol is the most important, it cannot be changed, it means love of freedom, the desire for independence and freedom.
The composition is crowned with purple stars with a gold border, which are referred to as solar signs. A stylized ornament is located around the shield, local residents emphasize that hops are selected as one of the most important agricultural plants in the region.
