The Krasnodar Territory of the Russian Federation is called the breadbasket of the country, but many tourists come here not for bread, but over the sea, sun, and rest. There are several wonderful resorts on the Black Sea coast, although the history of Tuapse, one of such pleasant places for a pastime, remembers other events as well. In particular, at one time it was here that the largest center for trade in human goods was located.
As part of the Russian Empire
People have lived in these territories since time immemorial, they were the ancestors of modern Circassians. The history of Tuapse as an urban settlement begins in the 19th century, it is associated with the expansion of the borders of the Russian Empire, the annexation of new lands. For the defense of the country, fortresses were built in the border areas.
This is how the Velyaminov fortification was born in 1838; it was named in honor of General Velyaminov. Shapsugs, the ancestors of the Adyghe, a year later razed it to the ground, but the new owners rebuilt it. The second time the Russian troops had to leave the territory in 1853, during the famous Crimean War. The Turks settled here, establishing a military base and supplying the Circassians with weapons.
In 1864, the remains of the Velyaminovsky fort were again in the hands of Russian soldiers, the local population paid dearly for participating in the war against the empire, the Circassians were forcibly evicted from their territories to the Ottoman Empire. On the site of the fort, the village of Velyaminovskaya was first founded, which in 1870 was transformed into a village. Cossacks, Russians, Armenians, Greeks, first the military, and then the civilian population began to actively move here.
Turn of the century and beyond
In the late XIX - early XX centuries. the history of Tuapse can be briefly represented by the following important dates and events:
- 1896 - the village receives a new name Tuapse, together with it - the status of the center of the district;
- 1916 - Tuapse officially becomes a city;
- 1916 - the construction of a railway is underway, which has a beneficial effect on the development of the region.
The October Revolution, which took place in Petrograd and echoed in Tuapse, made its own adjustments. For this region, as well as for the entire south of Russia, the political situation is characterized by extreme instability, frequent change of power, respectively, the collapse of the economy.
Only since the 1920s. a peaceful stage begins, city quarters are being restored, an oil pipeline is being built, industrial enterprises, educational and cultural institutions are opening. During the war, the city was destroyed, after the victory, the residents had to raise their beloved Tuapse from the ruins again, restore enterprises, and expand the tourist base.
