Located on the banks of the river of the same name, Voronezh was founded at the end of the 16th century as a fortress to protect against the Circassian raids. During the time of Peter the Great, the city became the cradle of the Russian fleet, because it was on the Voronezh River that the construction of the first warships began. The Voronezh Admiralty played an important role in establishing the Russian state in the status of a maritime power: more than 200 ships left the local shipyards and in memory of this one of the Voronezh embankments was named Admiralty.
Homeland of Russian shipbuilders
Peter the Great visited Voronezh seventeen times and personally participated in the construction of the first warships. Sailboats "Saint Mark" and "Saint Matvey" were launched from the Voronezh slipways. On the site of the modern Admiralty embankment of Voronezh, Bishop Mitrofan consecrated the St. Andrew's flag, which was first raised on a battleship in 1700.
The modern Admiralteyskaya embankment looks more like a square. It has a semicircular shape and is decorated with airy snow-white arches, symbolizing the country's access to the sea in the distant Peter's times. There is a stele in the center of the square, and the Admiralty Cathedral of the Assumption is located nearby. This is the oldest church in the city, preserved from the 17th century.
From Admiralteika, as the residents of Voronezh lovely call the embankment, you can go on a river trip on a motor ship.
Song heritage
Another embankment in Voronezh is named after K. I. Massalitinov, a famous Soviet composer and choral conductor. For many years he directed the Voronezh Russian Folk Choir.
The Massalitinov Embankment stretches along the Voronezh reservoir between two bridges:
- The North Bridge was commissioned in 1985 for the 400th anniversary of the city. Its length is 1800 meters. On the left bank of the Voronezh reservoir near the bridge from the side of Ostuzhev street, the Fishka water park is open.
- The Chernavsky Bridge over the reservoir in Voronezh was opened in 1959, but its history began in the 18th century, when a wooden crossing connected the banks of the Voronezh River. The last reconstruction of the facility was completed in 2009. The bridge is 364 meters long and has three lanes in each direction.
Sports coast
On the left bank of the reservoir between the Chernavsky and Severny bridges stretches the Voronezh Sportivnaya embankment. It got its name from the Palace of Underwater Sports, located on this street.
