This Siberian city is one of the three Russian leaders in terms of population. At the same time, the history of Novosibirsk began much later than that of its “colleagues” in the rating.
The origin of the city
The names of the first settlements formed on the territory of modern Novosibirsk are not very euphonic - Nikolsky Pogost and Krivoshchekovo, and the number of residents did not reach a thousand. The Trans-Siberian Railway was supposed to destroy the village, so the inhabitants moved to the right bank of the Ob, although the name of this area was even more terrible - Devil's fortified settlement, renamed Krivoshchekovsky settlement. The date of foundation of Novosibirsk is considered April 1893, the starting point is the arrival of the first batch of builders.
A rescript, signed by Nicholas II in 1903, has survived, where a settlement at the Ob station called Novo-Nikolaevsk was declared a countyless city. It is quite possible that the history of Novosibirsk, briefly stated, could have ended there, if not for the case.
At the crossroads
Novo-Nikolaevsk could have remained a small settlement at the station, if the question arose about a new railway line connecting Altai and Siberia. The mayor, Vladimir Zhernakov, realizing the benefits for the city, spent three years convincing the members of the imperial Commission on Railways that there was no better starting point.
In 1912, the project was approved, and the fate of Novo-Nikolaevsk took a cardinal turn. A real economic boom began in the city, the population grew sharply, and city quarters expanded. This time was marked by the rise of the economy, agriculture, science, education and culture. It was assumed that Novo-Nikolaevsk would become the center of the Altai province.
The years of Soviet power
The First World War did not affect the city that was geographically far from the battlefield. But the revolutionary events that began in the center were immediately echoed in Novo-Nikolaevsk. And after this unrest did not subside, civil strife in the vicinity of the city continued until 1920, armed uprisings and demonstrations continued and brutally suppressed.
In 1921, the Novonikolaevsk province was formed, respectively, the city became its center. In 1926 it became Novo-Siberian, the name gradually transformed into a more familiar one - Novosibirsk.
