Burgas is one of the most modern and developed cities in Bulgaria. For a long time, it was just a simple fishing town, or rather, even just a territory over which small fishing settlements and coastal fortifications were scattered chaotically. Everything changed after the opening of the city port, which turned Burgas into the country's first transport hub and made it the second largest after Varna.
Today the city continues to actively develop and successfully combines industrial production with the tourism sector. And although today there is little that reminds of the city's past, its entire history was placed in the coat of arms of Burgas. So, looking at the photo with him, you can immediately find out how the generations of his townspeople lived.
History of the coat of arms of Burgas
Judging by the data of historians, the first settlements on this place arose one and a half thousand years ago. However, if we take into account the history of Burgas as such, it began around the 16th century, when the city received its status, its current name and official symbols. It was then that the scattered villages grew so much that they turned into a single city, which was soon reliably protected by a fortress wall.
Description of the coat of arms
The coat of arms of Burgas is fully consistent with European traditions and consists of such parts as:
- a purple shield;
- two caravels;
- golden lion with a fish tail;
- tower.
The very same arrangement of these elements is quite interesting. The central place is occupied by the figures of a lion and a tower, with the lion supporting the tower. According to Bulgarian historians, the significance of this picture lies in the fact that Burgas is shown here as a not too easy city to live in, and its citizens are brave and strong people capable of withstanding any difficulties.
The lion's fishtail and caravels crowning the shield, in turn, indicate the importance of sea trade for the well-being and prosperity of the city. Moreover, the sea here itself acts as a source of benefits, although this is not at all surprising, given the history of the city's founding by fishermen.
As for the coloring of the shield, the classical interpretation is applicable here. An early version of the coat of arms used blue, symbolizing honesty and generosity. Today, the background of the coat of arms is purple, which means generosity, moderation and piety. In general, it absolutely accurately reflects the atmosphere of modern Burgas.
