The settlements located in the border areas, as a rule, have a very rich history filled with a variety of events, both peaceful and military. Many of them are reflected on the main heraldic symbols, for example, the coat of arms of Narva, a city closely connected with the life of Estonians, Russians and many other peoples.

Precious Azure

The modern coat of arms of Narva looks rather laconic, this also applies to the choice of colors for the shield and elements, as well as the image itself. Three colors have been chosen for the sketch, two of them being precious, gold and silver, the third color, azure, is also considered one of the most popular in heraldry.

It is important to note that gold is used in the coloring of individual details of the image, all elements of the coat of arms are silver, the background of the shield is azure. Due to this distribution of colors, the coat of arms looks stylish, dignified, but not pompous.

Description of the city's heraldic sign

The Danes contributed to the emergence of a new settlement on this territory. It was they who had a hand in the construction of the Narva Castle in 1223. Until 1346 the fortress belonged to Denmark, then it constantly changed its owners. The castle occupied an important strategic position, and therefore there were a lot of people who wanted to make it their property.

The image of one of the city seals, which dates back to 1385, has been preserved. There is an image of a fish and a crown on it. The representative of the fauna has survived the centuries safely, from time to time leaving the main heraldic symbol of Narva and returning victoriously. On the modern coat of arms of the city there are:

  • two fish looking in opposite directions;
  • two types of edged weapons - a sword and a curved saber;
  • three silver round details at the corners of the shield, symbolizing cannonballs.

Representatives of the aquatic animal world testify to the important geographical location of the city - near the Narva River. This flow of water at all times was of particular importance for the inhabitants of the settlement, providing water, food, playing the role of a natural barrier to external enemies. Weapons act as symbols of the city's power and defenses.

In 1385, a fish and a crown were depicted on the seal, personifying the power of the king. Around the circumference there was an inscription - "Seal of the city of Narvia", that was the name Narva had then.

In 1426, when the city belonged to the Livonian Order, a scarlet cross appeared on the coat of arms, resembling a clover leaf, and an angel with a knight's helmet occupied the upper part of the cartouche. In 1585, the heraldic sign of Narva was close to the modern image.
