Lithuania starts preparing for Christmas from the end of November. The excitement of the festive bustle captures everyone. For a long time these days it was customary to compete for the right to be called the most beautiful house, the most beautiful street, and so on. And now at Christmas in Kaunas they even decorate their workplaces, and a special commission chooses the most beautiful showcase and the most beautiful office in the city.

In early December, the caravan of Santa Claus, accompanied by elves, sets off. The President of Lithuania himself sees him off, and all the children of the country meet him both in big cities and in small villages. In Kaunas, a caravan passes along Laiswess Allee, the most famous street in the city, and a Christmas tree is lit on the Town Hall Square. And around the Christmas market is already in full swing. Everything that can please you and your friends during the Christmas holidays is sold in small huts. Adults choose gifts, children have fun on the playground or at the skating rink. There is a special hunting area where you can have a snack and warm up with all kinds of hot drinks from coffee to mulled wine. And if you want something exotic, the restaurant “Medžiotojų užeiga”, which is very popular in Kaunas, is nearby, where you can taste game dishes prepared according to old recipes of Lithuanian cuisine.

Christmas in Lithuania is a family holiday. On Christmas Eve, everyone gathers at home at the festive table. There are 12 dishes on the table, but they are all lean. Even alcohol is not exhibited this evening. At midnight, the whole family goes to the church for Christmas Mass. And only after that you can eat meat and drink alcoholic beverages. Christmas holidays last until January 6th, until the day of the three kings. Then three kings enter the city: one on a horse, the second on a donkey, the third, black, on a camel. They announce the Epiphany and this is the end of the holidays.
