If you look at the map of this continent, then many of Australia's rivers are shown with a dotted line. This is explained by the fact that they become "normal" only after heavy rains. And the rest of the time - these are, most often, either shallow streams, or just a string of small lakes.
Murray
It is this river that holds the title of the longest river on the Australian continent. Previously, during the drought period, the river bed practically dried up. Now there are no such problems, since the optimal water level is maintained by the reservoir created in the upper reaches of the Murray.
Murray is great for fishing. And not only amateur, but also sports. The waters of the river are rich in fish. Here you can catch: river trout; perch; cod; Australian smelt. In addition, you can catch catfish and freshwater shrimp in Murray.
If we talk about other entertainment, then this, of course, is a trip on real paddle steamers that ply the waters of Murray in the 19th century. If you wish, you can go water skiing and even rent a "floating house".
Attractions of the Murray Coast:
- Australian Alps;
- Lake Victoria, Alexandria;
- National parks;
- national reserves;
- artificially created sand ridge;
- the village of Loxton.
Darling
The Darling is the largest wandering tributary of the Murray. The total length is 2,757 kilometers. During a period of drought, which sometimes lasts for quite a long time, the river becomes very shallow. And at this time, the full-flowing Darling turns into a thin stream.
The Darling flows into the Murray waters near the town of Wentyrth. In its lower reaches, the river can seem very boring, as the local landscapes are dull semi-desert banks. But it is here that you will find the most interesting fishing spots. In spring and autumn, Darling dries up a lot, turning into separate stretches.
During the trip, you should definitely stop in the town of Brewarrin (about 800 kilometers from Sydney). Here you can live with a real Aboriginal tribe, taste their traditional cuisine and visit a local festival. And in this place, rock carvings have been preserved, which are about 40 thousand years old.
Marrumbidgee
The Murrambidgee is another major tributary of the Murray. In winter, the river sometimes threatens local residents with severe floods, but in summer it is really quiet. And then on its banks you can see many fans of fishing, and the quiet backwaters of Marrabiji will give you many quiet hours.
Particularly noteworthy is the town of Casuarina Sands. Here you can not only go fishing, but also try your hand at canoeing. There is a dam not far from the town - this is a great place for a long rest.
Attractions: South of Canberra, there is a reconstructed manor house that reproduces the way of life of the 1850s, and here it is worth exploring the exposition of the Sydney Nolan Gallery and drawings by Ned Kelly.
