The railways of Abkhazia are maintained and operated by the state enterprise "Abkhazian Railway". At present, passenger traffic on the country's railways is carried out along the Moscow - Sukhumi route. The movement is represented by four non-stop carriages to train 75/76. You can also get to Abkhazia from Russia by train Moscow - Adler. The named trains are not used for passenger transportation within the country. Cargoes move along the railways of Abkhazia from Psou to Gala and Ochamchira.

The railway lines from Sukhumi to Psou are electrified. The wire was dismantled in the direction of Ochamchira. The railway network of Abkhazia was badly damaged during the war. Later, it was partially restored and at first began to be used to transport military peacekeepers from Russia. Gradually, the movement on the railways was restored. Nevertheless, the railroad tracks are in disrepair and are gradually being destroyed more and more. The reason lies in the lack of funds for restoration work.

Cargo transportation to Sukhumi from Psou is carried out using electric locomotives. On the railways of the country, military echelons, made up of freight and passenger cars, move. They follow to such points as Ochamchira and Gudauta.

The length of the Abkhaz railway is approximately 221 km. It starts from the Psou platform on the Abkhaz-Russian border, runs along the Black Sea coast and ends with the Ingur platform on the border with Georgia. Suburban traffic in Abkhazia is currently not carried out.

Passengers traveling by train Moscow - Sukhumi manage to avoid crossing the Russian-Abkhaz border on foot through the checkpoint at Psou. They cross the border, taking their places in the trailers for the 75/76 train. They do not have to leave the cars. However, this type of travel is longer than others.

The railways of Abkhazia have many disadvantages. The rolling stock is badly worn out. The cars require major repairs or write-offs. Alarms and traffic lights partially do not function, so the movement is coordinated using a cellular connection. The country's railway stations are abandoned and in need of restoration.
