The Swedes are similar to their fellow Scandinavian brotherhoods: they are a little reserved in emotions, unhurried, neat and polite. Historically established traditions of Sweden are based on reverence and respect for nature, which is still a mother-breadwinner for most of them. Hunting, fishing and agriculture are important sources of income for the Swedish economy today.

Fish is the head of everything

This is how the well-known saying about bread can be paraphrased in the Swedish version. Fish dominates the table in every local family and, in accordance with Swedish traditions, a huge number of simple and complex dishes are prepared from it.

The most surprising and controversial fish dish of the Swedes is surstremming. Canned pickled herring has a very pungent smell, but despite its dubious taste, it is considered an exquisite Swedish delicacy. The history of its appearance is counted in centuries, and the recipe for its preparation is explained by the lack of salt in the Middle Ages. The holiday in honor of the start of sales of the "new harvest" of sour herring is one of the most interesting traditions in Sweden.

In honor of waffles and buns

Culinary delights are so important to Swedes that they are ready to celebrate the holidays dedicated to buns and other confectionery masterpieces. Waffles are celebrated at Annunciation, and cinnamon baked goods are paid tribute at the beginning of October. Such buns are considered a symbol of the country and all restaurants and cafes during the holiday offer a favorite delicacy with huge discounts.

Promise me to lose weight …

One of the New Year traditions in Sweden is that people make promises to each other of very different characteristics. The vow must be fulfilled, and therefore the Swedes often ask their relatives and friends to think of something for which they themselves do not have enough willpower. The fulfillment of these promises is considered a matter of honor, and many weak-willed citizens manage to part with bad habits in this way, for example, or lose weight.

Useful little things

Going to Sweden, it is important to have an idea of the habits and mentality of local residents, so that communication with them brings only pleasant emotions:

  • Swedish citizens are thorough and punctual. They do not like questions about personal wealth and the amount of income, but about where it is better to relax, what to see or try, they are ready to talk with guests willingly.
  • In the tradition of Sweden - cleanliness and order on the streets, and in homes, and in public institutions. Citizens of the kingdom expect to observe the established order also from numerous tourists.
