The Canary archipelago contains seven islands and belongs to the territory of Spain. For many years, the concept of a vacation in the Canary Islands has been considered a kind of symbol of fashionable relaxation and inaccessibility, although in fact the Canary Sea and their beaches are an excellent and very real option for those who love the ocean.

On the ocean shore …

To the question of which sea washes the Canary Islands, there is the only correct answer - the Atlantic. The ocean is everywhere here and its roar is heard in every corner of the Canary Islands. They drift in the Atlantic and the influence of the ocean affects everything: climate, customs, cuisine and entertainment. The ocean in the Canary Islands region is called the North Atlantic Ocean and is part of the second largest ocean on the planet:

  • The total area of the Atlantic exceeds 90 million square meters. km.
  • Its waters make up a quarter of the volume of the World Ocean.
  • The sea salt content in the Atlantic Ocean exceeds 34 ppm.
  • Its average depth is more than 3700 meters, and the maximum was recorded in the area of the gutter near Puerto Rico. There is a mark with a depth of more than 8740 meters.
  • The width of the Atlantic Ocean increases annually from two centimeters in its northern part to almost three centimeters in the central one.

Climatic features and beach holidays

The weather in the Canary Islands is largely shaped by the Atlantic. The climate of the islands can be classified as tropical, influenced by the trade winds. Summers are hot and dry here, and the water temperature on the beaches does not drop even in winter below +17 degrees. In summer, the ocean warms up to +23 degrees, which makes swimming pleasant and refreshing. The Canary Atlantic Current also plays a role in shaping the weather, providing moderate temperatures in the archipelago for both water and air.

Tourists who have been to the islands answer the question which seas are in the Canary Islands in different ways. Someone notes the lunar landscapes and volcanoes of Lanzarote, others prefer the sandy beaches of Fuenteventura, where you can wander all day and hardly meet people.

One of the most popular places in the Canary Islands among Russians is the island of Gran Canaria. The tourist infrastructure is most developed here, and guests have the opportunity to engage in all possible types of outdoor activities. The island's resorts offer to sail on a yacht or learn how to windsurf, master parachute jumping or take part in fishing in the open ocean.
