Krakow International Airport is the second after Warsaw in terms of passenger traffic and the number of flights. Krakow-Balice Airport is located 10 km west of the city center and since 1995 bears the name of Pope St. John Paul II. The airport code is KRK.

Krakow Airport has a 2550 m long runway and is equipped with a Class I precision landing system. The airport's development prospects are assessed as very high: several million people live in the cities located in the immediate vicinity.

The former military airfield in Balice began to be used for civilian traffic in the 60s of the last century, when the old airfield Rakovice-Czyzyny in the vicinity of Krakow was liquidated. Over the next few decades, Balice underwent many reconstructions and technical upgrades, resulting in the first Boeing 747 landing at Krakow airport in 2009. At the same time, a new passenger terminal was built at the airport and the building of the fire safety service was reconstructed. In 2017, the passenger turnover of Krakow-Balice exceeded 5 million people, and the first transcontinental flight to Chicago appeared in the airport's schedule.

Currently, work continues on the construction of a new runway capable of receiving aircraft of any class.
