The Dominican Republic is not as popular with our tourists as, say, Turkey or the countries of Western Europe. However, there is a lot to see in the Dominican Republic, and the most beautiful and varied vacation can be obtained if you rent a car. You just need to know some local peculiarities. For example, you need to book a car in a rental company before the trip, otherwise you risk getting either a too expensive car, or an outright sob, albeit at a modest price. This is especially true in the high season. By the way, agree initially about the availability of a child seat if you are traveling with children, as it must be specially βstockedβ for you.
Car rental in the Dominican Republic will require you to have:
- driving license;
- international passports;
- age at least 21, and in some offices - and 25 years;
- registration of insurance.
It is advisable to agree to full insurance, which will cost about 10β20 euros per day. But it will protect you from the slightest scratches.
How to drive in the Dominican Republic
Speed limits in cities will range from 25 to 60 mph. And outside the city you have to look at the signs. Please note that many vehicles on the road are in a technical state of disrepair. At the same time, check the car you are going to rent, and be especially careful on the road. After all, drivers in the Dominican Republic often do not comply with traffic rules. Often they do not turn on the turn signal, if the car has one at all. And when he is not there, they do not always wave their hand in the direction of the turn.
If you move at night, then you should beware of animals that periodically run out onto the tracks and large potholes. Keep in mind that country roads in the Dominican Republic are poorly lit. But turning to the right at a red light is allowed here.
If you rented a bike or moped and leave it on the street, be sure to fasten your seatbelt, otherwise they will be immediately hijacked.
When driving around the sights of the Dominican Republic, keep in mind that they are concentrated in the capital of the country, Santo Domingo, and in the major resorts. Many of them are natural. But among the historical places of interest, you should see the buildings of the colonial period. In the capital, you can see the palace that belonged to the son of Christopher Columbus, visit interesting museums, where you will be told about the history of the country and about the Taino Indian tribes who inhabited these territories a long time ago. The most interesting buildings in the capital are the Cathedral and the military fortress of Osama.
The numerous caves of the Dominican Republic are also an interesting attraction. For example, the Three Eyes Cave, which has colorful lakes. And in Puerto Plata there is the Cave of Wonders, where the rock paintings of the Indians are well preserved.
The parks of the Dominican Republic are wonderful: the Botanical Garden of Santo Domingo, tropical forests, Orchid Garden, Japanese Garden and Rock Garden.
