The adopted regional flag of the Council, which administers the affairs of the overseas department of Guadeloupe, is a white square cloth. A smaller square is inscribed in its center, which is divided into two unequal parts by a central pattern. The top of the square is light blue and the bottom is green. The drawing is a stylized image of a flying sea bird in dark blue against the rising sun, made in yellow. The bird "tick" divides the flag field into two unequal parts. Under the green field of the central square, there is a black inscription in French "Region of Guadeloupe". Below the label is a yellow horizontal stripe.
The unofficial flag of Guadeloupe has a classic rectangular shape and is divided horizontally into two unequal parts. The upper stripe of smaller width is painted in deep blue color, and on its background there are three stylized French golden heraldic lilies. The lower part of the unofficial flag of Guadeloupe is black. In the center, the sun is depicted in gold, behind which is a green sheaf of sugarcane stalks - the main agricultural crop of the island state.
History of the flag of Guadeloupe
The lands of the island state in the Caribbean were declared French territory in 1674. Since then, Guadeloupe has once again become dependent on other European countries, but France has stubbornly reclaimed the islands. In 1916, its colonial claims were legislated, and in 1946 the islands were given the status of an overseas department. The flag of Guadeloupe has long been the national flag of France.
Today Guadeloupe, as an overseas department, is governed by a prefect, and an elected General Council has its own official flag, which coincides with the coat of arms of Guadeloupe.
