One of the largest in Russia, Pulkovo airport is located in the Moskovsky district of St. Petersburg, 20 km from the center of the northern capital. The airline has existed since 1932. Then it was called the Shosseinaya airfield, like the nearby railway station.

The Leningrad airport was actively working until the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, and a few years after its end it was reconstructed. In the 70s, the Shosseinaya airfield was renamed into Pulkovo and at the time of the opening of the new terminal was even considered the largest in the country. In 2016, by the British publishing house Daily Telegraph, Pulkovo terminal was included in the top ten most beautiful structures of this kind in the world.

The modern enterprise serves several dozen airlines, including international ones - more than 200 destinations in total, and its passenger traffic in 2019 reached more than 19 million people. The length of the shortest domestic flight from St. Petersburg airport is 442 km (to Cherepovets), the longest is 4859 km (to Yakutsk). Pulkovo is the home airport for Rossiya Airlines.

Pulkovo airport code - LED. It was assigned to the airline at the time when St. Petersburg was called Leningrad, and it was decided to leave the code after the city was renamed.

Today the only terminal at the St. Petersburg airport is functioning - the airport Pulkovo-1, and from it there are flights to more than two hundred destinations. The new air terminal complex was commissioned at the end of 2013. The building was designed by architects from London. Several elements of the terminal's design conjure up images of St. Petersburg. So the wavy ceiling of the first floor of the building symbolizes the bends of the riverbed of the Neva, and the roof of the dome gilded in the sunlight reminds of the domes of Orthodox churches. The image of the St. Petersburg bridges is embodied in the connecting ladders between the check-in and border control areas.

At the Pulkovo-1 terminal, a variety of services are available for waiting and arriving passengers:

  • car rental from various companies,
  • duty free shops,
  • luggage office,
  • tourist office,
  • information desk,
  • three business lounges,
  • post office of Russia,
  • mother and child room,

Catering establishments are represented at Pulkovo Airport by well-known world chains. While waiting for the flight, passengers can grab a bite to eat, drink coffee and have a hearty lunch or dinner. Restaurants and cafes of Burger King, Starbucks, McDonald’s, Planet Sushi, Teremok, Shokoladnitsa and others have opened in Pulkovo. The terminal also has vending machines for coffee, mineral water and light snacks.

For passengers awaiting departure, conditions have been created for the performance of religious rites in the Orthodox chapel in the airport building.

Airport attractions

While waiting for a flight to Pulkovo, passengers can while away the time by seeing local attractions. At the entrance to the terminal, guests are greeted by a monument to the pioneer of aeronautics by Dmitry Kaminker. The famous St. Petersburg sculptor embodied in his work the image of a Russian aviator who tested the first aircraft and, risking his life, brought the future era of modern aircraft technology closer. Pulkovo employees call the "Aviator" the guardian angel of the airport.

In the baggage claim area, you can see illustrations by Alexander Florensky. More than three dozen works are presented to the viewer's judgment on the walls of this part of the terminal. The paintings were painted by the artist to illustrate the book "Petersburg Alphabet" - these are landscape sketches about St. Petersburg streets, canals and bridges.

The human dream of flying was embodied in the works of Dmitry Shorin, decorating the departure hall. The sculptor depicted female angels with airplane wings behind them.

And, finally, the founder of the city on the Neva, Russian Tsar Peter I, by Mikhail Dronov, welcomes guests in the duty-free shopping area. The tsar is depicted in full size, cast in bronze and rolls along a modern suitcase - a symbol of the traveling man.
