The monument was created for a year and a half with money donated by the residents of the city. The names of all benefactors are immortalized on the pedestal. At the base of the pedestal was laid the land from the Italian city of Bari, which was brought to Nikolaev by the Italian Constantino Massa, who also took part in the opening ceremony of the monument. The consecration of the monument to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was performed by Archbishop Pitirim of Nikolaev and Voznesensk.

To all this, the shipyard erected by his order at the mouth of the Ingul River was named the city of Nikolaev.
