Description of the attraction
Cape Hillsborough National Park is a small (only 816 hectares) coastal park 40 minutes from Mackay, where the rainforest literally meets the reef. The waters surrounding the park are part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine National Park.
In the park, you can see about 150 species of birds and 25 species of butterflies. Among the animals of the park are the ubiquitous kangaroos, dwarf flying squirrel, turtles and wallabies. The friendly wallabies that appear on the beach every morning at dawn are a favorite subject for photography.
At the very Cape of Hillsborough, aborigines from the Juipera tribe once lived, and today, following a special trail 1, 2 km long, you can get acquainted with their way of life and traditions.
The highlight of the park is its rugged coastline, formed by volcanic activity in ancient times. Traces of those geological changes are still visible today - in steep cliffs, coastal caves and secluded coves.
