Description of the attraction

Zilantov Holy Dormition Monastery was founded by Ivan the Terrible on October 15, 1552 at the place where during the assault on Kazan stood the tsar's tent and camp church and where Russian soldiers killed during the battle were buried. In 1559, the flood of the Volga washed away and destroyed the monastery walls, after which the monastery was moved to the top of the mountain.

The main ensemble of the monastery was formed in the 17th century. It housed the Assumption Cathedral (1625), a temple in the name of Metropolitan Alexy (1720), residential and outbuildings. A memorial church with a church in the name of the icon of the Savior Not Made by Hands, erected over the mass grave of soldiers who fell near Kazan, is attributed to the monastery. In the form that has survived to our times, the new church was consecrated on August 30, 1823 by Archbishop Ambrose.

In 1918, ten monks of the Zilantov Monastery, led by the archimandrite, were shot without trial on an unclear charge of shelling the Red Guards. For some time the monastery was inactive, but soon an Orthodox community was formed on its basis. The community existed until 1928, and then it was liquidated. The cemetery of the monastery, which had the burials of eminent citizens, was destroyed in the 30s. In 1956, due to the construction of the Kuibyshev reservoir, the Church of the Savior Not Made by Hands was on the island. Since 1998, the monastery began to revive, and in 2003 a dam was built to the monastery.
