Monuments of Art and Culture of the Ancient World is a collection that describes the earliest period of history. Here are sculptural images that are associated with the religion of the ancient Egyptians: the patron saint of the pharaohs and the sun god Amon, Isis with Horus, Osiris, the goddess Bastet in a cat image, ushabti figurines, sacred scarab beetles. The mummy of an Egyptian of a noble family dating back to the 1st millennium BC, which is rare in the Russian province, evokes surprise and delight among the museum visitors. and the painted sarcophagus of the shield-bearer Ankh-ef.
Ancient civilization is represented by ancient Greek ceramics and high quality vase paintings (pelicas, amphorae, cups, oinochoi, crater and others), ancient Roman terracotta, Pompeian mosaics and almost weightless thinnest vessels made of blown glass, gravestones, copies and originals from Roman sculptural portraits.
The collection of ancient Russian art is, first of all, icons, religious objects made of wood, fabric, bone, precious metals, copper-cast church plastic, liturgical old printed books, popular prints and engravings of religious content, temple round sculpture, bas-reliefs. The exposition of the museum acquaints visitors with the leading schools of icon painting of the 16-19 centuries: the Stroganov, Moscow, Northern letters, the Vladimir-Suzdal region, the Volga region.
The relics that do not have a price are the two-sided external icon "The Mother of God of Shuiskaya-Smolensk and Nikola", the restrained ascetic head "Deesis", luxuriously decorated with ornaments "The Old Testament Trinity in Acts" in Palekh writing, a touching provincial temple icon "The Prudent Robber". Fragments of the fresco iconostasis brought from the destroyed Cathedral of the Annunciation in Yuryevets were recognized as the best in the country. Presumably, the work of the masters who created this iconostasis was supervised by Kirill Ulanov, the royal favored icon painter of the Armory Chamber.
