Description of the attraction

The Royal Opera House in Madrid, rightly considered one of the main attractions of the Spanish capital, is located on the Eastern Square, opposite the Royal Palace. Opera performances are constantly gathering full halls of spectators, and members of the Spanish Royal Family love to visit the theater.

The idea of creating a theater specifically for the royal family's entourage belongs to Queen Isabella II. The magnificent building of the theater, in the form of an irregular hexagon, was built by the architects Antonio López Aguado and Custodio Moreno. The main façade of the building faces the East Square, while the smaller rear façade overlooks Isabella II Square.

Many great artists of that time took part in the creation of the interior of the theater, including Bravo, Techeo and Lukar.

The inauguration of the Royal Theater took place on Queen Isabella's birthday, October 10, 1850. The opening was marked by the premiere of Donizetti's "La favorita", in which many famous artists of that era were involved.

In 1863, Giuseppe Verdi came to the theater, and the Spanish premiere of his opera The Force of Destiny took place here.

Since 1925, the theater was closed for reconstruction, and reopened in 1966. From 1991 to 1997, the theater was rebuilt into an opera hall with an area of 1,430 sq. m. The interiors and facades of the building were refurbished.

During its existence, the Royal Theater of Madrid has received on its stage almost all famous opera singers.
