Description of the attraction
One of the most beautiful sights of the city of Kostroma is Ostrovsky's pavilion. It is located on the banks of the Volga River, not far from the river station.
Ostrovsky's pavilion was built in 1956. It is installed high above the river, on an embankment that has survived from the ramparts of the old Kostroma Kremlin. The pavilion in its architectural forms is similar to the old park and garden pavilions, once erected in Russian estates. The gazebo contains seven columns.
If you go up the stairs and find yourself in the gazebo, you will have a magnificent view of the Volga. The unique beauty of Russian nature, the mesmerizing solemnity of the landscape will captivate you to such an extent that you simply cannot immediately leave here, and you will enjoy this marvelous landscape for a long time to come. It was also Alexander Nikolaevich Ostrovsky who stood here for a long time and admired this splendor. It is known that he has never been to this very arbor. But, visiting his family estate Shchelykovo, he rested in this very place and considered it one of the best views.
The life and career of Alexander Nikolaevich Ostrovsky is inextricably linked with the Kostroma land. The city of Kostroma served as the prototype for most of the Volga cities in the island plays. And the grateful descendants considered it fair to name the gazebo after their favorite playwright.
The talent of Alexander Nikolaevich Ostrovsky was fully revealed in the Shchelykovo estate. Here were created his famous works, such as "Dowry", "Forest", "Wolves and Sheep", "The Last Victim", the fairy tale "Snow Maiden". At present, the State Memorial and Natural Museum-Reserve of A. N. Ostrovsky "Shchelykovo", and the writer himself was buried in the village of Nikolo-Berezhki.
The Drama Theater in Kostroma bears the name of the great playwright. It was founded in 1808, and has been pleasing the audience with its performances for more than 2 centuries.
Ostrovsky's pavilion is also known for the fact that it was “filmed” in the film “Cruel Romance” based on the play by A. N. Ostrovsky's "Dowry".
Today Ostrovsky's gazebo is one of the main attractions of Kostroma. The townspeople love to come here and bring their relatives, friends and guests to this place. And they do this not only because this place is associated with the name of Alexander Nikolaevich Ostrovsky, but also because the panorama that opens from here is incredibly beautiful.
