Description of the attraction

The Historical Museum is, in fact, two museums, each with its own mission. The original museum opened after World War II. He changed the names, areas of expositions, premises several times. Currently, the number of his collection exceeds 400 thousand exhibits, including many rare ones. The entire history of Bosnia and Herzegovina is reflected in these exhibitions. In addition to archival materials, historical photographs, etc., the museum has a unique collection of works of art by masters of the former Yugoslavia. It contains more than two and a half thousand works that were preserved during the Balkan war. The scientific work of the museum was almost never interrupted, and today its scientific library and documentation center are the basis for studying the historical past of the new state.

The exposition of the modern Historical Museum is dedicated to the events of the civil war of the 90s. The museum, located near the National Museum, occupies a small building of the socialist era. The laconic appearance of the building and the restrained design of the exposition correspond to the theme. Memories of the past war live in the memory of every inhabitant of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and especially Sarajevo. And the city itself has not yet fully recovered from its wounds. Even popular local souvenirs - pens, lanterns - are made from shell casings left over from the battles that have recently raged here.

The exhibition on a separate floor is dedicated to the almost three-year siege of Sarajevo. It resembles a museum of the siege of Leningrad: a lot of things are exhibited, adapted for military and siege life. This simple, no-frills exposition is worth a visit - to understand what the inhabitants of the former federal Yugoslav republic went through on their way to creating their own country.

Interesting military equipment is exhibited in the courtyard of the museum.
