Description of the attraction

The city of Obgrada traces its history back to the Middle Ages. On the northern slopes of Mount Kunagora, the remains of an ancient castle are still visible. During the Turkish invasions, the castle was plundered and abandoned, and later it was reconstructed for a long time, but it was never completely restored.

The architectural gem of the city is the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Its height is 38 meters and its length is 19 meters. The church was built in a neoclassical style. The dominant element is two tall towers with a triangular pediment. In 1876, the last restoration was carried out, the walls were plastered and repainted, the gables, doors, windows and the roof of the building were updated.

The main altar was erected in 1844 and resembles a spacious and elegant tent, in the center of which is the image of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. There are also side altars in the temple - Saint Joseph with his life-size image made by an unknown artist, the altar of Saint Epiphanius and the altar of All Saints. The organ of the famous master Francis Focht, purchased in 1854, was installed in the church.

In the southeast of the city there is the Dubrava house, exact data on the time of its construction have not survived, as well as the one-story Bezhanets palace, which has a rectangular shape and was built in the style of late Baroque and Classicism.

Also in the Pregrada, a two-story building of the 19th century has survived, where the famous writer Leskovar Janko (1861-1949) was born and lived for some time, and the famous pharmacy and drug production workshop of Adolphe Thierry, a pharmacist known throughout Europe.
