The St. Petersburg State Academic Ballet Theater traces its history back to 1977, when Boris Eifman created his own troupe called the Leningrad New Ballet. The concept of the “New Ballet” for that time was bold and innovative, since the theater was originally created as a director's, author's, as a kind of experimental laboratory under the direction of one choreographer.
The first performances of the new theater immediately brought him success with the public. Critics started talking about completely new trends in Russian ballet. But, despite this, the followers of the traditional school in the art of ballet were in no hurry to recognize the young choreographer. For a long time Boris Eifman was considered a "choreographic dissident" in ballet.
In the late 70s - early 80s. Eifman's theater developed its own approach to creating a repertoire. The theater staged many ballets based on the works of the classics of world literature. Turning to classical subjects, the choreographer mastered new genres of ballet and creates ballet-buff, ballet-parable, ballet-drama, ballet-epic.

For a long time, the ballet troupe worked without its own stage, there were not even premises for rehearsals. The troupe had its own rehearsal base only in 1989. Thanks to this, the number of artists increased, and the necessary theater services appeared. Now the theater has started producing premieres every year. At the same time, the period of triumph of the Eifman theater abroad begins. Authoritative Western critics called Boris Eifman a theater magician, who is the first choreographer of the 21st century, a leader among all choreographers.
At present, the Boris Eifman Ballet Theater is known to lovers of ballet art from all over the world. Such performances of the Academic Ballet Theater under the direction of Boris Eifman as Tchaikovsky, Red Giselle, Don Quixote or Fantasies of a Madman, Anna Karenina, The Seagull are loved and appreciated all over the world. Among the latest works, a new version of Don Quixote, or the Fantasies of a Madman, the ballet Onegin, stands out.
As the author of more than forty-five performances, Boris Eifman calls the genre in which he works “psychological ballet”. In the language of dance, the master openly talks with the viewer about the most exciting and difficult aspects of human life: about the meaning of life, about knowing the truth, about the collision of spirit and flesh.
Boris Eifman is an Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR, People's Artist of Russia, Laureate of the State Prize of Russia, more than once he was a prize-winner of well-known international and Russian theatrical awards, including the Golden Mask, Golden Soffit, and the Triumph Prize for his special contribution. in the development of national culture. The work of the theater artists was also awarded with various awards and prizes.
A completely new period in the life of the theater began in 2009, when the Government of St. Petersburg decided to build a Dance Academy. In addition, in the summer of 2009 the results of the competition of architectural projects "Boris Eifman's Dance Palace" were summed up.
In 2010, the theater achieved significant success both at the Russian and international levels. The ballet troupe took part in large international festivals in France, Germany, France, visited Finland, Israel, Italy, Poland, Holland and Spain on tour. In 2010Boris Eifman's creative team received the Golden Soffit award in two nominations of the competition: Best Ballet Performance - for the performance Onegin and Best Male Role in a Ballet Performance - for the role of Onegin, the theater soloist Oleg Gabyshev received.
In 2010, the theater moved to a new rehearsal base in connection with the beginning of the construction of the Academy of Dance on the Petrogradskaya side.
