The National Opera and Ballet Theater of the Republic of Moldova in Chisinau is a popular venue for various cultural events in the city, on the stage of which both famous stage artists and students of the Choreographic College perform.

The repertoire of the national theater consisted of four operas: "The Heroic Ballad" by A. Styrchi, "Casa Mare" by M. Kopytman, "Aurelia" and "Grozovan" by D. Gershfeld, as well as a number of musical works of the world heritage.

In 1957, the country got the opportunity to create its own ballet troupe. For this, students were sent to Leningrad: V. Tikhonov, P. Leonardi, V. Poklitaru, V. Salkutsan, K. Osadchy. After graduating from the choreographic school. AND I. Vaganova, a group of students returned to their native Chisinau and laid the foundations for the creation of a ballet collective. At that time, the ballerina G. Melentieva and the experienced dancer P. Fesenko were invited. The first ballet performance staged at the Moldavian Opera Theater is the Fountain of Bakhchisarai, the author of which was B. Asafieva. As a result, the Chisinau Opera and Ballet Theater became one of the best in the USSR. In 1980, a new building on Stefan cel Mare Street was provided for the cultural institution. The construction of this building was carried out by architects L. Kurennoy and A. Gorshkov.

In 1990, a very important event took place in the cultural life of Moldova - the artistic project of the International Festival of Opera and Ballet Stars "Invites M. Biesu" was launched. Thanks to this, the country's opera and ballet art has reached a new level, significantly expanding its capabilities and horizons.
