Description of the attraction

Ngorongoro is located in northern Tanzania and lies at the western edge of the Rift Zone, on the border with Kenya. A picturesque and varied landscape in which the steep cliffs of the Ngorongoro Crater walls coexist with spacious valleys covered with grass and shrubs. The reserve surrounding the Ngorongoro Crater is huge, covering an area of about 6,500 square kilometers, and its importance for this region of Africa has increased even more after it received the official status of the International Protected Area and Biosphere Reserve. Ngorongoro fulfills two main tasks - preserving the natural resources of the region, as well as protecting the interests and traditional way of life of the local Maasai tribe, which still grazes herds of cattle, sheep and goats here. The heart of the reserve is the crater, or caldera, Ngorongoro, the remains of just one of the many extinct volcanoes in the area. The Ngorongoro Caldera offers the most picturesque big game in Africa; it is also one of the largest calderas in the world: its diameter is 14.5 km, depth is from 610 to 762 m, and its total area is 264 sq. km.
